Timeline of the History of Kohat
Around 400 BC According to a legend Rajas Kohat and Aadh Samodh (Adil Saboor place named after him) in local language settled in Kohat area. The city is named after the former ruler.
1380 Khattak and Bagashs fought a war against the Orakzies. A Jirga gave Kohat plains to the Bangashs, the South East to the Khattaks and the Mountains to the Orakzaies.
1505 Zahir-ud-Din Babar’s troops attacked and plundered Kohat.
Mid 1500s Pir-Roshan Bayazid Ansari’s influence spread in Kohat. Orakzies and Afridis supported him. He fought battles against the Mughals. His grandson and Successor Ahad and his wife Bibi Alai had many followers in the region.
July 31, 1581- 1691 Venerable Haji Bahadur (Syed Abdullah) PBUH lived.
Mid to late 1600s Sher Muhammad Khan Bangash ruled Kohat for the Mughals. He fought against Khushal Khan Khattak.
1662 Ahdad, the Roshania leader was killed in the Lowghar mountains of Kohat. His wife Bibi Allai continued the resistance against the Mughals. His son went on to fight the Mughal until they were reconciled in Shah Jehan’s times.
1613 – 19 February 1689 Khushal Khan Khattak died.
Mid 1700s The Teri Khans rose to eminence in Karak-Kohat during the Durrani Kings era.
Early 1800s Barakzai Princes became influential in Kohat.
February 1809 Elphinstone passed through Kohat.
1818 Samad Khan, a Barakzai prince, became a ruler of Kohat.
1827 The English adventurer Mr Masson traveled through Kohat. Kohat and Hangu generated Rs. 80000 and 20000 revenue in Durrani currency.
Peshawar’s ruler Pir Muhammad Khan expelled Sadu Khan and Osman Khan, sons of Samad Khan, from Kohat.
1834 Hari Singh handed over Kohat to Awtar Singh.
1836 Failing to control Kohat, Mahraja Ranjeet Singh leased it to Sultan Muhammad Khan under a treaty. Khawaja Muhammad Khan, son of Sultan Muhammad Khan administered Kohat for his father.
1848 G Lawrence took refuge in Kohat during the Second Anglo-Sikh War.
1836-1849 Kohat was under the rule of Sultan Muhammad Khan Barakzai.
By March 29, 1849 Kohat was under the rule of the East India Company rule.
Lieutenant Polk was the first Assistant Commissioner of Kohat.
November 1849 Durrani Prince Jamhoor was made the Extra Assistant Commissioner of Kohat.
1851 Kohat was separated from Peshawar to make it a district. Captain Cock of the 3rd Punjab Infantry was made the Deputy Commissioner.
1853-54 Kohat Military Camp established. It was made a formal Cantonment in 1890.
1857 First school under the English government was established in Kohat. It was called the Elementary English School.
1863 First Dispensary under the English government was established in Kohat.
1868 Prince Jamhoor died.
1872 Cavagnari House constructed for Louis Cavagnari, the English Deputy Commissioner, in Kohat.
February 8, 1872 Sher Ali Afridi of Kohat killed Lord Mayo, the Viceroy of India in the Andaman Island Prison.
1873 The English established a 3rd degree Municipality in Kohat.
1880 Government High School No. 1 established in Kohat
1894 First Girls School was established in Kohat by the English Deputy Commissioner Lee. It was called Lee’s Girl School.
1901 The new province of NWFP Created by Lord Curzon.
1902 Construction of Khushal Garh Bridge completed.
1908 Anjuman-I-Islamia, the first modern political party formed in Kohat. Maulana Ahmed Gul, Sheikh Abdul Rehman and Shah Jee Advocate were among the founders.
1912 First Muslim High School was established in Kohat.
1912-1999 Ghamkol Pir lived.
1922 Air Force base formed in Kohat.
13-14 April 1923 Ajab Khan Afridi kidnapped Major A.J Ellis’ daughter Mollie Ellis. This was a retaliation for the intrusion of English troops into Ajab Khan’s home. Mrs Ellis was accidently killed during the fraca. Ajab Khan, however, gave a gentlemanly treatment to the young girl.
1924 Hindu-Muslim riots in Kohat.
15 November 1949 Electricity introduced in Kohat.
Summer 1951 Locust attack in Kohat.
March 12, 1952 Liaqat Memorial Hospital started serving people in Kohat.
1953 Government Post Graduate College established in Kohat.
1961 Ajab Khan Afridi passed away in Mazar Sharif.
1965 Cadet College Kohat started imparting education.
1967 Tanda Dam completed.
May 1975 On the demand of Jamat-I-Islami, The King Gate of Kohat was renamed Shah Faisal Gate.
August 4, 1975 Anjuman-I-Sahafyan Kohat established.
May 5, 1976 Aziz News Agency established.
August 1, 1982 Kohat became a Division.
1982 Karak made a District.
1983 Mollie Ellis came to Kohat at age 75.
1997-98 Hangu made a District.
2002 Kohat Press Club formed.
